When my daughter was younger, I took her with my on every single workout. No matter if I was running, biking or lifting weights, she was by my side. As a breastfeeding mom of a daughter who refused to drink out of a bottle, my options limited. I went through several jogging strollers looking for the perfect fit. I did some homework for you so you can find the stroller that meets your needs.
First things first, what makes a jogging stroller? A jogging stroller is different than a regular terrain stroller, as jogging stroller has three large fixed wheels, shocks, 5-point safety harness and drink holders.
When looking for a jogging stroller, there are several considerations you will want to make, including:
Locking vs. Swivel front wheel
Some jogging strollers have front wheel that can be locked into place when jogging or can swivel when in the city. I personally did not like the locking feature, as I live in the city and there were not too many places that allowed a straight away run. I needed the maneuverability of the swivel wheel. Having an option to do either is helpful.
To ensure the safety of your child, a secure five-point harness is the most important safety feature (in my opinion).
Running and parking brakes
A running brake is located on the handle, and helps control the speed of the stroller while going downhill. The parking break is a safety feaure to implement to keep the stroller in place when stopped and you need to take your hands off the handlebar.
Outside of the safety harness, a sleek folding design was my second most important factor in selecting a jogging stroller. I loved to jog at the park or nature trail, so having the ability to fold the stroller easily and store it in my trunk was key.
Most jogging strollers offer options with 16 or 20-inch wheels. The larger wheels are helpful for rolling over bumps in the road smoothly. Smaller wheels are more compact and easier to store and fold.
I’m tall (5’11) and so is my hubby (6’2), so we looked for a handle bar height that was suited for taller adults. It is helpful to find a stroller with an adjustable height handle if you and your significant other will both be using the jogging stoller. An adjustable height also ensures you will find the right height of the handlebars that works for you during your run.
