2,018 miles in 2018 Challenge Week 11
This week I experienced what every runner dreads…I got injured. It happened the way all running injuries seem to happen…not when actually running. I had run 14 miles on Monday and then 7.4 on Tuesday. I had just finished my 7.4 mile run on the treadmill when the doorbell rang with the UPS guy delivering a package. I went out to get the package when my dog, Snowball, tripped me and I twisted my ankle.
I immediately felt a surge of hot pain shoot up the back left side of my left ankle into my calf. I had a 1/2 marathon that Saturday, in Asheville, and I could not afford to be injured. I immediately started the RICE method by icing my ankle, elevating it while I worked and I wore Compression Socks.
I didn’t run at all on Wednesday or Thursday. I did weights and stayed off my ankle. On Friday I did a test run of three miles to see if I could handle it, and I felt a twinge at mile three and hopped off the treadmill immediately.
I was held together, quite literally, with tape and a prayer and I entered the race.
My leg held up and I actually felt great. I felt so great in fact that I ran negative spilts and PR’d my time from last year! Woot!!
I am telling you, it’s a miracle what a little rest does for running legs. I hadn’t run for basically three entire days, so when I got to the race, my legs felt great. I also had been super hungry that week for some annoying reason and I was totally carbing up. My hunger was uncontrollable! Partner that with the fact and I couldn’t run and I was super frustrated! But, the end results were great. I felt so good that I could have run that race twice.
The setback in mileage did lower my total count for the month, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Last time I didn’t listen to my body, I ended up in a boot for 12 weeks.
Total running miles this week: 44.5
This week I’ve been obsessed with a few things:
- Audible – I love listening to music when I run, but sometimes I like listening to a good audio book. Right now I’m listening to I Thought It Was Just Me (but it isn’t): Making the Journey from “What Will People Think?” to “I Am Enough by Brenee Brown. This book is about the effects of shame on women.
- Speaking of books, I’ve also been reading a ton lately. I just finished two books by Shari Lapena: A Stranger in the House and The Couple Next Door. The Couple Next Door is amazing. It is a thriller and it had me anxious to find out what would happen next every step of the way. However, A Stranger in the House was severely lacking. It was so painful to read. I almost just didn’t finish.
- I bought these Markers from Amazon because they were a lightening deal and I love them. I actually color sometimes when on a call because it helps me concentrate better. My daughter and I also love to color at night when she gets home from school and we talk abut her day.
How was your running week?
